23 things

Here we are at the end - I am very proud of myself for finishing. I never thought I could do this.

There are some things I knew about, some things I won't use and some I will not only use, but have started recommending to library users.

Del.icio.us is now tagged on Firefox at home and my favourites are already there.

Thanks to all involved in setting up this training. I would happily participate again.

E books

I have read a lot lately about Kindle and other products - although it may never totally take the place of a printed book it is certainly gaining in popularity. I have added a link to the Rime of the Ancient Mariner

podcasts

I decided to remain with my local history theme and added the Public Record Offices podcasts to my bloglines account. It was pretty easy.

The podcasts are at the right

Web 2.0 awards

I was only going to have a quick look here but I think I found a gem - certainly something I would want to read.

I chose the books list and found lulu and looking at the history stuff I was surprised at so much Australian stuff.

http://www.lulu.com/

And a book on women in Victoria that you can download for free! I may have trouble getting away from this site.

Our foremothers by Geraldine Roberts

Here's the link

Zoho again

I found this really frustrating - I couldn't use the publish to blog part in spite of a lot of time trying.

Here's what I created

Life is mostly froth and bubble, Two things stand like stone,

Kindness in another's trouble, Courage in your own

I may give Zoho a miss. I don't need to tell librarians where the quote is from, do I?

Zoho

I have created a document - I will try to use the functions for posting - let's see how we go. Not working very well.

Wikis

Well I certainly use Wikipedia a lot. Very good for quick facts.

I have posted my blog in the sandbox and added a favourite book as well. Very easy!

Libraries and Web 2.0 - using Technorati

I haven't used technorati before so I used it to look at some library blogs. At the side I posted one that sums up the situation for libraries very neatly

In a nutshell, we can no longer supply the old service and expects out customers to remain happy. Certainly some will, but we need to look at what the people want, not what we want to give them. Time to look at all the old rules and regulations - who are they for? Us or the customers.

I know many of our staff doing this training have found things they cannot only use to make their own work easier, but to allow the library patrons to become more interactive with the library and other patrons.

Del.icio.us

I have tagged a number of North Melbourne dining establishments - so we can chose where to have Christmas lunch, dinner or both.

http://del.icio.us/heathermckay/north

Here are the North Melbourne books

I have added an extra librarything just to see some covers

here's my library thing list

Library thing

In keeping with my local history theme, I have added 5 books about North Melbourne, including mine:)

The covers aren't available on line, so I will try to work out how to do it.

Image generation

I made a road sign - very easy but I spent ages going through some of the options for images. There are some fun ones and some totally useless.

This was an easy one - here's the URL

RSS feeds and bloglines

RSS feeds was fun - I made a google homepage and added some stuff I thought was interesting and some stuff I can use later. It was very easy to set up and easy to alter the page so the most important is on top. This is something I will use a lot!!

I set up a bloglines account and added a few things but it's fiddly and time consuming so I don't think I'll go back to it, unless somebody points out an obvious benefit over my google homepage.

What's new and exciting for me

I still think the best bits are to come, but the most exciting part was being able to create my own book cover - very simple and I had so much fun with the wording.

I have used the illuminated address to make a card on flickr
The illuminated address is the one on Flickr - beautiful, isn't it!!

Information on the Hotham, later North Melbourne Council, 1859-1905.

The suburb of Hotham broke away from the City of Melbourne (CofM) in 1859. There was a great deal of unrest at the time over funding and suburbs felt they were not getting anything from CofM as all money was spent on the City.

Hotham was renamed North Melbourne in 1887, largely for financial reasons.

The small council always struggled as there was no major revenue earner apart from rates. It was always beset with councillors and ratepayers wanting to return to CofM.

In 1905 North Melbourne was absorbed back into the City of Melbourne.
